Paintings of Savannah by Harriet Bigham

Emory and I recently had the pleasure of meeting the painter Harriet Bigham. Although we initially contacted her out of an interest in her cityscapes of Kansas City, Missouri, we were surprised and delighted to learn that in 1989 she painted four watercolors of my hometown of Savannah, Georgia. We purchased three of the paintings. The fourth, a view from the Desoto Hilton, is still available. As a Savannahian, I certainly feel biased in favor of these paintings’ subject matter, but I also greatly admire their color, brushwork, and composition.

“The watercolors of Savannah were done in 1989. My friend and I participated in a workshop at SCAD for art teachers. We didn’t spend too much time in the workshop, as we were drawn to the beautiful homes on the squares and spent the week doing watercolors. In the evening I did a large watercolor of the rooftops of Savannah from the window of a hotel in the center of town. I have never forgotten the history and beauty of the city and have always wanted to return.”
